Gas emergency

Note: Since 8 December 2023, new gas connections are prevented in some zones and buildings as per ACT Government regulation. More information is available on the ACT Government website. These changes do not apply in NSW.

Evoenergy contract Jemena to provide gas network asset management services in the ACT, Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Bungendore and Nowra. Jemena provide an online self-service portal to request, pay for and track natural gas connection services including:

New connections: request a new gas connection
Additions and alterations: request changes to your existing gas connection
Disconnection: request connection decommissioning and meter removal

Visit the Jemena connections portal.

  • Applying for a new gas connection

Before we can turn the gas on at your home and establish a new gas connection, you’ll need to ensure you have a gas retail agreement in place.

To arrange a new natural gas connection, we recommend that you speak with an energy retailer. This will ensure that from the time the gas is connected, you will be supplied natural gas by your chosen retailer. A list of energy retailers is available on the Australian Energy Regulator's website.

Once your retailer submits a new connection application to us on your behalf, we will advise them within 10 business days if your connection is classified as either a basic or negotiated connection. In the case of a basic connection, we will also provide your retailer with a connection offer.

It’s important to note that if you apply to us directly through the Jemena connections portal we can only provide you with a gas connection. If you want to connect electricity and gas at the same time, you should contact a retailer that can provide these services.

    New gas connection classifications

New gas connections are classified as either basic or negotiated, based on the technical characteristics of the connection. Each connection class has different pricing mechanisms and timeframes for carrying out the connection work and energising the gas supply.

  • Altering an existing gas connection

If you want to alter a current gas connection, such as apply for a meter upgrade or down grade, a meter relocation or a pulse connection, you should contact your gas retailer. This will ensure that from the time the gas connection is altered, you will continue to be supplied gas and minimise any disruption to your gas service.

  • Disconnecting a gas connection

Permanent gas disconnections can be arranged if you no longer require a gas connection at your premises, for example:

the building(s) on your property is to be demolished and you need to abolishing the gas connection to ensure demolition and construction is safe, or
you no longer use gas or gas appliances in your home.

If you no longer require a gas connection at your home, it is essential that you arrange for a permanent disconnection to ensure the existing connection is fully abolished, and your premises is safe. A permanent connection also means your premises no longer requires maintenance or routine checking and testing by Evoenergy.

When we perform a permanent gas disconnection, we:

Arrange for a technician (or multiple technicians) to attend your premises
Establish traffic and pedestrian management (where required)
Locate alignment of main and connection saddle
Locate and verify (by potholing) location of other utilities and services
Cut concrete or bitumen, remove grass sods, lift pavers (where required)
Excavate down onto gas main and connection saddle
Clamp off connection pipe and cut the pipe
Glue or weld a cap onto the connection pipe and wait for the joint to set
Record final gas meter reading and serial number
Remove your gas meter, regulator and meter bracket
Purge the connection pipe to remove gas to ensure the area is safe
Remove clamp from connection pipe, backfill and compact the excavation
Restore the surface, including concrete, bitumen, pavers etc. (where required)

The cost of permanent gas disconnection is $785 excluding GST.

    Temporary gas disconnection

Temporary gas disconnections can be arranged through your retailer if you need to disconnect from the gas network for a short period of time. It’s important to note that a temporary gas disconnection may only be suitable in some circumstances, and that with a temporary disconnection a pressurised underground gas pipe remains on your premises.

When we perform a temporary gas disconnection, we:

Arrange for a technician to attend your premises
Turn your gas meter control valve off
Unscrew the unions connecting gas meter
Insert a plug to prevent gas flow
    Reconnect the screwed unions
Turn your gas meter control valve on
Test your connection to ensure it is safe

When we perform a reconnection following a temporary disconnection, we:

Arrange for a technician to attend your premises
Turn your gas meter control valve off
Unscrew the unions connecting gas meter
Remove plug to enable gas flow
    Reconnect the screwed unions
Turn your gas meter control valve on
Test your connection to ensure it is safe

The cost of temporary gas disconnection is $153 excluding GST.
