GAS EMERGENCY

Evoenergy is supporting the rollout of nbn fibre upgrades across the ACT by enabling the installation of new nbn cables on our existing electricity poles.

To maintain the safety and reliability of the electricity network, we need to assess the electricity poles and related infrastructure before nbn cables can be installed. These assessments will confirm whether the poles are suitable for installation of new nbn assets, or whether maintenance, strengthening or replacement is required before installation can proceed.

Evoenergy has engaged delivery partner, Zinfra, to carry out the electricity pole condition assessments.

Pole condition assessments will take place from July 2026 to January 2027

What you need to know

  • The nbn upgrade is expected to use approximately 1,300 Evoenergy electricity poles across the ACT.
  • Some poles may be located in residential backyards.
  • Evoenergy will assess all relevant poles to help ensure the continued safety and reliability of the electricity network.
  • In some cases, assessments or preparation works may require multiple property visits, temporary power interruptions or, in rare cases, the removal of vegetation or structures.
  • Evoenergy has engaged Zinfra to complete the assessments and related work. All Zinfra workers will carry identification and you are welcome to ask for their ID to confirm who they are.

Pole assessment process

The nbn cable installation involves several steps to support a safe and reliable rollout. A number of delivery partners will be involved, each with a specific role:

  • nbn: Responsible for the installation of the nbn network upgrade. This will include a third party engaged by nbn e.g. Ventia, Service Stream and APD.
  • Evoenergy: Responsible for the pole condition assessments and associated works.
  • Zinfra: Engaged by Evoenergy to carry out the pole condition assessments and associated works.

Step-by-step

  1. nbn initial inspection: nbn’s authorised representatives may visit your property to determine how the fibre connection will be installed. For many Canberrans, this inspection may have already occurred.
  2. Evoenergy customer notification: If electricity poles are required for the nbn installation in your area, you will be notified by Evoenergy before Zinfra workers attend your property to undergo the initial pole condition assessment.
  3. Evoenergy initial pole condition assessment: If Evoenergy electricity poles are required for the nbn installation in your area, Zinfra workers will attend your property on Evoenergy’s behalf to assess the relevant pole and determine whether any work is needed before installation.
  4. Evoenergy secondary assessment: Some poles may require maintenance, strengthening, or replacement before the nbn upgrade can proceed. If additional work is required, Evoenergy teams may need to attend your property again to finalise the construction or maintenance plan.
  5. Evoenergy construction or maintenance: If additional work is required, Zinfra, on behalf of Evoenergy, will carry out the required works to prepare the pole for nbn installation.
  6. nbn fibre installation: nbn’s authorised representatives will visit your property to install the fibre network on the pole and complete the nbn upgrade connection from the pole to your home.
  7. Evoenergy final pole inspection: Evoenergy or Zinfra teams will do a final inspection of the pole for quality assurance purposes.
