GAS EMERGENCY

13 19 09

01 May 2026

When: Monday 4 May to Saturday 13 June 2026, between 7.00am and 6.00pm. No works on Sundays.

Location: Gundaroo Drive between Horse Park Drive and Pallin Street

Road closures: West bound lanes of Gundaroo Drive will be closed for duration of project. More information is available on the City Services (detours) and Transport Canberra (bus impacts) websites.

Starting Monday 4 May, Zinfra, on behalf of Evoenergy, will be completing critical maintenance of the Canberra primary main gas pipeline under Gundaroo Drive, near the intersection of Horse Park Drive.

The Canberra primary main gas pipeline is a major piece of infrastructure, supplying gas to Canberra’s northern suburbs. The works are essential to ensure safe and reliable delivery of gas to customers in this area, including Gungahlin and Belconnen.

The works will involve site establishment, heavy vehicle deliveries, construction works (e.g. excavation, pipeline recoating), backfilling and site restoration. The project is being actively managed to minimise noise impacts on surrounding residents during construction. Gas supply will not be impacted during the works.

Excavation down to approximately 5 metres is required to reach the pipe. As such, the west bound lanes of Gundaroo Drive between Horse Park Drive and Pallin Street will be closed from 7 am Tuesday 5 May until the completion of the project. Traffic management controls and signage will be in place to direct local traffic and pedestrians as required. The project is expected to be completed by Saturday 13 June, 2026.

Helpful information

  • What work is being done?
We are carrying out critical maintenance to Canberra’s main underground gas pipeline that transports gas to customers in Canberra’s northern suburbs. The maintenance works need to be completed to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the gas network.
  • Why is Gundaroo Drive closed?
The critical maintenance needs to be done on a section of the pipe that is under Gundaroo Drive. We need to dig around 5m deep under the road to carry out the works. Unfortunately, there is no alternative to closing the road.
  • How do you know the works need to be done in that spot?
We undertake regular inspections of the pipeline to look for maintenance issues. Our technology found a minor defect in the pipe at that location. The defect doesn’t present any immediate risk but needs to be dealt with to protect against future issues.
  • Why do the works need to be done now?
Delaying maintenance would increase the risk of more serious issues, such as faults, which can lead to unplanned outages or emergency repairs in the future. Undertaking planned maintenance ensures that the work is done in a controlled and efficient way and gas continues to be supplied safely to homes and businesses.
  • Who is carrying out the work?
Evoenergy own and operate the gas distribution network in the ACT region. Evoenergy contracts Zinfra for maintenance, inspections and upgrades of the gas network. As such, Zinfra will be carrying out the works on behalf of Evoenergy.
  • Will gas supply be impacted during the works?
No, gas supply will not be disrupted during the works.
  • What road will be affected?
The west bound lanes of Gundaroo Drive, near the intersection with Horse Park Drive, will be closed for the duration of the project. East bound lanes will remain open.
  • Is the schedule likely to change?
No, contingencies have been built into the schedule. However, in the unlikely event of changes, we will update residents as soon as possible.
  • How is the closure expected to impact traffic?
Drivers should expect some delays during peak times and are encouraged to allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes.
  • How will traffic be managed?
We are working with Transport Canberra to ensure appropriate traffic management controls and signage are in place to safely direct traffic and pedestrians.

North bound traffic will be detoured up Horse Park Drive to Mirrabei Drive. South bound traffic will be detoured down Horse Park Drive to Anthony Rolfe Ave.
  • What is being done to minimise impacts?
Works have been carefully staged and coordinated to reduce disruption as much as possible. Works will take place between 7.00am and 6.00pm to minimise the impact of noise on nearby residents.
  • How are people being kept informed?
Local residents were notified of the planned works via letter in late April/early May.

Details of the closure can be found on the ACT Government City Services website (Gundaroo Drive road closure from Tuesday 5 May to Saturday 13 June 2026 - City Services) along with their ‘Road and path closures’ map (https://www.cityservices.act.gov.au/roads-and-paths/act_public_road_closures).

ACT Government City Services are also including details of the closure in their daily brief to media from Thursday 30 April onwards.
  • Where can I find the latest traffic updates?
Traffic updates are regularly provided by local news outlets.

Roads ACT is a partner of the Waze - Connected Citizens Program, which can be accessed online at www.waze.com/wazeforcities. Roads ACT shares its road/footpath closures and Waze drivers communicate back real-time traffic congestions and incidents through the Waze app. A live snapshot of congestions and incidents is displayed on the online map.
