Storm response update | Sunday 10 December 10 AM

On Friday 8 December 2023 at around 8.00pm, Canberra experienced a fast-moving storm resulting in extensive damage to our electricity network. At the height of the storm, we had around 14,000 properties without power across the ACT.

This morning around 340 customers remain without power. Our crews continued to work hard last night to repair as much of the network as they can, however some repairs have become more complex than anticipated due to the extent of the damage.

We are working to get more customers restored by this evening, however, it is possible some customers may have extended outages past this. We are providing as much information as possible, however some restoration times are difficult to determine until our crews are in the midst of their work. As we get through more works today we will be able to provide more updates.

If you have a damaged point of attachment or other internal electrical faults you will need to engage a private electrician to fix these before our crews can reconnect you to the grid. Our crews will let you know if this is the case if they can, however we recommend checking your point of attachment (where the electricity network connects to your home). Once your electrician has completed the works required, please call us on 13 10 93 so we can arrange to reconnect you to the grid.

The ACT Emergency Services Agency have opened a Community Support Hub at Melba Copland Secondary School – Senior Campus at 97 Verbrugghen Street, Melba to assist those affected by the recent storm event. Community Liaison Officers and ACT Fire & Rescue Community Fire Unit (CFU) volunteers will be there to provide support to community members who continue to be without power. There are also facilities to dispose of food waste, charge devices such as phones, laptops and tablets and bags of ice for those who need it.

We apologise for the disruption and thank you for your patience as we work hard to restore power safely and as quickly as possible.

If you see fallen powerlines or damaged electrical equipment – stay at least 10 metres away from them or anything they’re touching – including fences. If you’re unsure if they’ve been reported, call us on 13 10 93
