FAQ

What happens when I sign up?

When you sign up to the Energy Share SMS program, you will receive a text to welcome you to the program. You can then expect between two to four text messages during one fortnight period asking you to reduce your energy use for two hours. We won’t tell you the exact days this will happen, as it is important for us to measure how people respond at short notice. As Evoenergy can monitor the smart meter measurements, we will be able to measure the effectiveness of our messaging on the network demand.

What do I have to do?

Once you’ve signed up, all you have to do is follow the energy saving tips when we ask you to reduce your energy use. You will only be asked to participate for two hours — remember that once you sign up, participation on the day we text you is voluntary. If you’re able to participate, please reply with ‘yes’ and reduce the amount of energy that you are using. Even adjusting your home’s heating or cooling by a few degrees can make a big difference!

What if I can’t help that day, or I change my mind?

If you’re not able to participate on the days we text you, simply don’t reply to our text — there is no obligation to reduce your energy use at any time. If you want to help but aren’t sure how much you can do, please reply to let us know you will reduce your use, and simply turn off the things you think you can do without for the two hour period.

If you’ve changed your mind, or don’t wish to receive text messages any longer and want to withdraw from this program, text STOP to 0437 218 945.

Why are you doing this?

Our network is one of the most reliable in the country, where Canberrans experience fewer unplanned power outages than any other city in Australia. However, there are a few times a year where the electricity network comes under strain from heavy demand for electricity. This can happen on extremely hot or cold days — particularly when people are using air conditioners or heating their homes.

The Energy Share SMS program will help manage electricity demand across the network better, faster and smarter. We will continue to measure the effectiveness of SMS to manage electricity demand, particularly the response time and response rates from Energy Share participants. By calling on the Canberra community to share their energy, together we can reduce the cost of electricity supply for everyone.
